Girl STEM Stars
We dare to imagine a world where girls of color from underserved communities all over the world have equal access to STEM education and gain the confidence to pursue careers in tech.
We dare to imagine a world where girls of color from underserved communities all over the world have equal access to STEM education and gain the confidence to pursue careers in tech.
Girl STEM Stars is on a mission to educate and expose girls of color from underserved communities to STEM education and impactful careers in tech.
We journey with girls from the ages of 8-18 by providing them with the tools, space and access they need to explore STEM classes, connect with prominent community and global leaders, and attend virtual tech worksite field trips to places like: NASA, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and more.
I spent nearly a decade frustrated by not seeing people who looked like me at work (a tech company) on a daily basis.
After a life-changing, near-death experience that left me in a coma for 3 weeks, I had an epiphany. It was time to stop complaining about the lack of Black women in Silicon Valley and take action.
So, from my hospital recovery bed, I called Legal Zoom and told them I wanted to create a nonprofit that advanced girls of color from underrepresented communities in STEM science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math.
That nonprofit is now Girl STEM Stars.
Through Girl STEM Stars, we’re making a tangible impact on the lives of Black girls and young women of color from underserved communities who aren’t getting access and early exposure to resonant, STEM education.
We’re helping to break down barriers to entry into tech in ways that inspire many more girls of color to seriously explore STEM-related professions and paths.
Most importantly, though, I’m proud to say our organization offers access to STEM programs and mentorship experiences that expand the way these these young women see themselves and the possibilities that exist for them in this world.
We take a thoughtful approach to creating our dynamic, hands-on programs. Through learning about things like data science, coding robotics, and more, the girls participating in our programs walk away with a brand new understanding of and excitement for STEM.
The Girl STEM Stars education and mentorship programs are uniquely designed to help young girls:
Make STEM a real part of everyday life.
Broaden their understanding around the career and educational opportunities available to them.
Get mentorship from and see themselves reflected within diverse members of tech teams and decision-makers at some of the most influential companies in the world.
Dispel gender-based myths and stereotypes that often keep them from pursuing and achieving in the sciences, technology, engineering and math.
Build self-confidence that will carry them into adulthood.
Our footprint is now global, and we’ve been fortunate enough to impact girls from the Bay Area all the way to Africa, and even to Malaysia.
Girl STEM Stars is a nonprofit organization that exists because the time to normalize diversity and inclusion within tech teams and leadership is now.
If you’re ready to help us advance young girls of color in STEM globally and equip the diverse tech leaders, entrepreneurs and decision-makers of tomorrow, we welcome your support.
However you choose to give, we thank you in advance for investing in the STEM education of girls of color around the world.
